Annual Programming Vision
The New York Arabic Orchestra is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and New York City’s leading institute in classical and contemporary Arabic music, directed by world-renowned virtuoso and educator, Bassam Saba. Our mission is the preservation and promotion of classical and traditional Arabic music through concerts, new compositions and education, and stand for Arabic music as a gateway to understanding and embracing Arab culture. The NYAO annual programming vision includes a concert series throughout the NY Metropolitan area and Northeast, workshops throughout the Northeast, and semester-long music classes in New York City.
Arabic Percussion The NY Arabic Orchestra Arabic Percussion class is a group class for students who wish to learn the basics of Arabic percussion (riq, darbakkeh and frame drum) and learn to perform with an ensemble.
Choral The NY Arabic Orchestra Choral Class caters to adult students who wish to learn and sing classical Arabic songs and muwashahat in a fun group setting, with opportunities to perform at the conclusion of the semester. Students will be provided with a rich repertoire of popular songs from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Al-Andalus.
Ensemble The NY Arabic Orchestra Ensemble Course is a performance class geared toward musicians and music students. Coursework includes exercises in Arabic scales, improvisation and rhythms, analysis and performance of classical and contemporary Arabic music pieces and songs. This course is a prerequisite for those interested in joining the NY Arabic Orchestra.
Kids and Family Program The Kids and Family Program is an opportunity for children to be exposed to classical Arabic music and language and to discover the beauty of Arab heritage alongside their parents, through singing Arabic songs and other fun musical activities.
Workshops / Outreach
Arabic Music Semester Intensive To provide training to students outside of the New York area, the NY Arabic Orchestra created a mobile workshop series called the Arabic Music Semester Intensive (AMSI). The program is geared toward college students of music, performers and teachers.
NY Arabic Orchestra Residency program is a 2-4 day visit to a university or music conservatory, providing lecture-demonstrations and workshops and concludes with a concert open to the public. The program is tailored for the university structure, interwoven with relevant courses and engaging multiple departments throughout the campus.
Project 'Hey Youth!' is an innovative program in Arabic music designed for children of 6-18 years, suitable for public schools, private schools and community centers. Children are introduced to Arabic instruments such as the nay, ‘ud, qanun and Arabic percussion. Classes are engaging, interactive sessions of playing, movement and singing, and integrate exercises which inspire curiosity, creativity, meditation, expression and open conversation with the artists.
